PM 101: Workshop 1 - Introduction to Project Management

The Project Management 101 Learning Series is based on Dr. Te Wu’s book, “Optimizing Project Management”.  It is available for free digitally from our library. Click here to download. The workshop will be taught by one of the instructors in the Management Department of the Feliciano School of Business.

Also, in preparation for all these workshops, we ask participants to think about the projects that you have done in the past or currently, document some of the key challenges and obstacles, reflect on how you overcame them and what would you do differently.  These will help to enrich class discussions and can be invaluable for some of the class activities.

Location: In-Person | COLE 340

Date: Sept 12

Time: 1pm – 3pm

Facilitator: Dr. Te Wu – Associate Professor, Management

The primary goal of this workshop is to introduce project management – what, why, who, where, when, and how. In addition, the workshop will introduce the organizing framework of project management, including the key principles, knowledge domains, life cycle, processes, tools, and techniques. If time permits, we will also briefly discuss the Project Management Institute (PMI) and its certification.

As a part of the workshop, we are planning two activities:

  1. Discussion on the projects in your professional and personal work
  2. Examine what many consider to be the most important planning document in project management – the project charter.

Benefits

To Participants:

  • Gain a working knowledge of the steps involved in and knowledge required for the successful completion of projects.
  • Acquire a vocabulary which permits conversations and learnings across many departments and disciplines.
  • Lay a foundation for the tactical tools to be learned in future workshops.

To the University:

  • Deploy a common vocabulary for conversations and learnings across many departments and disciplines, leading to a higher rate of projects completed on budget, on schedule, with expected results.
