PM 101: Workshop 3 - Scope Management
Location: In-Person | COLE 340
Date: Nov 14, 2024
Time: 1pm – 3pm
Facilitator: David Vincenti
Organizations and people undertake projects because they are not satisfied with the status quo, whether that is improving something existing or developing something completely new. From this perspective, projects are mechanisms to make change happen and all projects by definition are investments of a better future.
But what is that future state? What are the improved or improved functions, features, or results? What are the essential requirements of the project? The question of “what” to do is the domain of scope management, and in this workshop, we will conduct a deeper dive to understand the challenges of defining, managing, coping with change as related to scope.
As a part of the workshop, we are planning two activities:
- Identify scope, not just of the desired outcome but also the management effort required to properly perform the work
- Conduct a work breakdown exercise to more atomically identify tasks required for project work
Benefits
To Participants:
- Learn how to define and secure consensus on project objectives before significant investment has been made.
- Develop tools and tactics to communicate and maintain the limits of project objectives, avoiding overcommitment and underdelivery, and defending project teams from commitment to activities which do not contribute to the success of their projects.
To the University:
- Equip project leaders with skills to define and communicate projects completely and clearly to campus leaders and other university teams.
